Hypnotherapy uses your imagination and creativity to help you find new ways to feel, think and behave.

Our brains are divided into left and right hemispheres. For most people, reasoning and logic are carried out in the left part of the brain, whilst emotion and creativity happen in the right part.

In life the analytical part is usually in charge, reasoning things out and testing everything it hears. In the hypnotic trance, this part of the brain quiets down. We become better at remembering, visualising, imagining.

We also have a conscious and an unconscious part of our minds. We can only be conscious of between five and nine things at any one time. Everything else happens in our unconscious mind. Hypnotherapy allows suggestions to be made directly to your unconscious mind. For this reason it is particularly good at dealing with habits, things we just find ourselves doing without necessarily intending to.

Most people experience hypnosis as a feeling of deep relaxation and inner focus. You always stay in control of yourself. You can't be made to do anything you don't want to do or reveal anything you don't want to reveal through hypnosis.

You will need to feel confidence and trust in your hypnotherapist. If you don't have this confidence, the therapy is less likely to succeed. This should be a big part of your decision whether to go ahead with any practitioner.

Clinical hypnosis is a gentle and safe procedure. Even so, it is not always appropriate for people who are severely depressed, when CBT may be a better option. Your therapist should also be told if you suffer from epilepsy.

Hypnosis also means that you lie still with your eyes closed for quite a long time. Arthritis sufferers may be better treated with more frequent, shorter trances. Some contact lens wearers prefer to take them out.
